How to delete your Instagram account

Let’s face it, we’ve all had those moments when we’ve thought about taking a break from the endless scroll of social media. Maybe you’re tired of the constant bombardment of perfectly curated photos, or perhaps you need some time away from the digital world. Whatever your reasons, if you’re considering deleting your Instagram account, you’ve come to the right place.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of permanently deleting your Instagram account. But before we dive in, let’s take a moment to understand what this means. Deleting your Instagram account is a serious step. It’s not just about removing the app from your phone, but completely wiping out your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes, and followers. It’s a one-way ticket, with no option to recover your account or data once it’s gone.

If that sounds a bit too drastic, Instagram also offers the option to temporarily disable your account, which simply hides your profile until you decide to reactivate it. We’ll cover both methods in this guide, so buckle up!

Part 1: How to Temporarily Disable Your Instagram Account

From your Computer

  1. Log in to your Instagram account from a computer or mobile browser. Unfortunately, you cannot disable your account from the Instagram app.
  2. Click on your profile picture in the bottom right corner and then click on ‘Profile’.
  3. Click on ‘Edit Profile’. This is located next to your username at the top of the page.
  1. Scroll down and click on ‘Temporarily disable my account’ at the bottom right of the page.
  2. Choose a reason for disabling your account from the drop-down menu.
  3. Re-enter your password. This is a security measure to ensure that you are the one making this change.
  4. Click on ‘Temporarily Disable Account’. And voila! Your Instagram account is now hidden from the world. When you’re ready to rejoin the Instagram community, simply log back in to reactivate your account.

From Account Center

  1. Click menu More in the bottom left, then click Settings settings.
  2. Click Accounts Center, then click Personal details.
  3. Click Account ownership and control, then click Deactivation or deletion.
  4. Click the account you’d like to temporarily deactivate.
  5. Click Deactivate account, then click Continue.

Note: You may not be able to deactivate your account from Accounts Center at this time.

Part 2: How to Permanently Delete Your Instagram Account

From your Computer

  1. Log in to your Instagram account from a computer or mobile browser. Just like with disabling your account, you cannot delete your Instagram account from the app.
  2. Visit the Delete Your Account page. You can access this page directly here.
  3. Choose a reason for deleting your account from the drop-down menu.
  1. Re-enter your password. Again, this is to confirm that it’s you who is making this decision.
  2. Click on ‘Permanently delete my account’. And just like that, your Instagram account, along with all your photos, comments, likes, and followers, will be gone for good.

Remember, once you delete your account, there’s no going back. So make sure you’re absolutely certain before you click that button.

Tips for Before You Delete Your Instagram Account

Before you go ahead and delete your Instagram account, here are a few tips to consider:

  • Download your Instagram data: Instagram allows you to download a copy of your data, including your photos, comments, profile information, and more. To do this, go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Privacy and Security’, and then click on ‘Request Download’.
  • Think about your username: If you think you might want to come back to Instagram in the future, it might be worth considering whether you want to keep your current username. Once you delete your account, your username will be gone too, and you won’t be able to use it again in the future.

So, there you have it – a comprehensive guide on how to delete your Instagram account. Whether you’re looking for a temporary detox or a permanent farewell, we hope this guide has been helpful. Remember, the digital world will always be there when you’re ready to return. Until then, enjoy your break from the ‘gram!
